Fantasy Sports
There is no question that fantasy sports have become big business. Today, there are an estimated 19.4 million people in the United States and Canada alone who are active participants in at least one fantasy sport. And that number is expected to continue rising. Even though most people still think of football when they think of fantasy sports, it has actually spread to include almost every single sport available, including baseball, basketball, NASCAR, golf, tennis, horse racing, hockey, and soccer. The most important key to excelling at any fantasy sport is attention to detail. This means that if participants want to win, they must know their sport and their players inside and out. Because participants compete against each other based on statistics that are generated by teams or individual players, this point cannot be overstated. Regardless of the actual selection process (whether it be through a draft or an auction), having a thorough knowledge of the sport and the players will make all the difference in the world. This means not only being familiar with the players themselves, but also with strategies, dynamics, and more subtle indicators of how effective a team or player will perform for you.
Even though baseball, basketball, and football are perhaps the most well known fantasy sports, there are a host of other sports that are also becoming popular in the fantasy world. Since participation in fantasy sports has become such a favorite pastime in recent years, more nontraditional fantasy leagues have sprung up around the world. For example, on an international level, cricket has become a popular fantasy sport. Sites like Cricket Web, Cricketinc.com, and Fantasy Cricket Online are just a few of the places dedicated to fantasy cricket leagues. In the United States, the PGA now offers fantasy leagues on their site (PGA.com) and feature standard league play, salary cap play, and playoff/tournament style play. Hockey is another sport that has been growing in popularity. Today, NHL.com provides the most comprehensive fantasy competitions, news and analysis for those who want to participate in a fantasy hockey league. In addition, there are also lesser known fantasy competitions that have been increasing in popularity over the past few years, including leagues that revolve around collegiate sports, pro wrestling, and even Hollywood (where you pick movies instead of athletes).
